Farewell to ARM Member Dr John Hirst, FASSA
The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) is saddened to learn of the death of long-time member Dr John Hirst. A leading historian and public intellectual, Hirst was a powerful advocate for an Australian republic and served as the inaugural convenor of the ARM in Victoria.
Hirst also served the broader republican cause as a member of Prime Minister Paul Keating’s Republican Advisory Committee and as an author of several republican tracts.
“John Hirst made an enormous contribution to the republican cause over the years as he did in the field of Australian history and indeed public life more broadly” said ARM National Director Tim Mayfield.
“In addition to his service to the ARM, John fulfilled many public roles including as the chair of the Commonwealth Civics Education Group, as a member of the Film Australia Board, and as a council member of the National Museum of Australia. On behalf of the Australian Republican Movement I extend our condolences to his family and friends,” said Mr Mayfield.
