AUSTRALIANS DON'T WANT A KING, OR CHARLES

Recent polling by Pure Profile reveals that support for the monarchy in Australia has plummeted under King Charles’ reign, with only 40% of Australians now saying they would prefer to keep King Charles instead of choosing an Australian as our Head of State.

Conducted between 6-12 April 2023, the nationally representative poll asked respondents “Do you support keeping King Charles III as King of Australia (our Head of State), or should Australia have an Australian chosen by Australians to represent us instead?”

60% of respondents said they wanted an Australian chosen by Australians. That percentage rose to 69% among those aged 18-35, showing younger generations’ strong opposition to the Monarchy. A majority of all age groups supported having an Australian instead.

The polling comes just ahead of King Charles III’s Coronation on 6 May 2023.

Co-Chair of the Australian Republic Movement Nova Peris OAM OLY said that 6 May 2023 should be marked as the last time a monarch is crowned King or Queen of Australia.

“Australians are now well and truly ready to embrace a more equal future where all Australians are treated equally under our Constitution” said Ms Peris.

“Monarchy is all about entrenched privilege, about rule by Kings and Queens over and above the Australian people. It has no place in a democracy or a nation that prides itself on equality, on multiculturalism or equal opportunity for all its people.”

Co-Chair Craig Foster AM said the coronation serves as a reminder that Australians had no choice at all about who our Head of State is and highlighted the need for change.

“It’s time our Head of State was an Australian, chosen by us, accountable to us and serving all of us” said Mr Foster.
