Happy (Future) Independence Day!

The Australian Republic Movement has celebrated King Charles’ birthday long weekend by declaring Happy (Future) Independence Day!

National Director and CEO Isaac Jeffrey said: “Aussies love a good public holiday. Most Aussies though probably don’t know this long weekend is to celebrate the King of Australia’s birthday and even less would care.

“It’s been over a decade since a sitting monarch has made the 17,000 kilometre trip to visit Australia. We’re an afterthought for the monarch and most Aussies feel the same way about them – complete indifference. And while we’re thankful for the day off, it would certainly be better spent celebrating something that Aussies really care about instead.

“The June long weekend in the very near future will be a great time to stop acknowledging a foreign King and to start celebrating Australia’s Independence Day. The fact is, we’ve severed almost all our legal ties to the United Kingdom, except one – the monarchy.

“This long weekend is a great opportunity for all Aussies to have a good look at the British Royals and to ask themselves, their friends and family, whether they really represent a modern Aussie democracy.

“We’re a proud nation full of incredible Aussies who are more than capable of stepping up to be elected as our own local Head of State. Someone who can advocate for Australia and Aussies. Someone who can champion our industries, trade, jobs and charities, like Charles does for the UK. Someone who can work and represent us full-time, and be loyal and fully-committed to Australia and only Australia on the world stage. Someone who can promote Aussie interests at home and abroad.

“We’ll still get a public holiday in June if we get rid of the monarchy, but let’s make it for a cause we can all get behind – celebrating Australia and our place in the world as a stronger, united, independent, modern democracy – an Australian republic which puts Aussies at its heart.

“We’ll always be mates with the UK, but this is the moment for Australia to start the next chapter in our ongoing story. This is the moment for democracy, accountability and choice. This is the moment for national pride and celebrating all things Aussie. This is the moment for an Australian republic and an Aussie Head of State.”
