Queen Mary: Stuff of Medieval Fairytales, Not Modern Representation

The Australian Republic Movement has today acknowledged the ascension of Frederik and Mary to the Danish throne.

National Director and CEO Isaac Jeffrey said: “Many Australians will feel joy in seeing a local Tassie girl becoming Queen after marrying her handsome Prince, who overnight became King of Denmark. It’s the stuff of fairytales with the gowns and jewels, glitz and glamour to boot. But just like a children’s book, it might be fun to read and look at the pictures, but it’s a long way from how modern stable democracies should choose their representatives.

AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC MOVEMENT SUGGESTS ALTERNATIVE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS FOR 12 JUNE

On Monday 12 June, Australians in the ACT, NSW, Tasmania, SA and the Northern Territory will take a day off to mark the birthday of the King of Australia, despite his birthday being in November and that the King isn’t an Australian, doesn’t live in Australia and wasn’t chosen by Australians.

With support for an Australian Republic quickly rising and polling published by the ARM in April demonstrating that an overwhelming two thirds of Australians believe Charles and the monarchy are out of step with their values, it is clear an alternative is required.

Australians Say No More Taxpayer Funded Royal Visits

Speculation that King Charles III may visit Australia next year has raised questions about funding for the trip, which the Australian Republic Movement says should be borne entirely by the British Monarchy.

Nationally representative polling in April by PureProfile showed that more than 78% of Australians believe that the Royal Family, not Australian taxpayers should foot the bill for any travel to Australia (detailed research provided below). 

An even higher proportion of women and Australians under 45 believed the Royals should pay their own way (82%).

A Letter to Charles: Join Australia In Celebration Of A Republic And Australia's Moves Towards Full Independence

Co-Chairs of the Australian Republic Movement Nova Peris and Craig Foster have written to King Charles III inviting him to join Australians, as an equal, in its journey towards full independence as a republic.

 They caution though that the relationship must be built on truth, an acknowledgement of past wrongs and an apology, in order that all contributors to Australian history are equally committed to truth and justice.

REPRESENTATIVES FROM 12 COUNTRIES JOIN INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR KING CHARLES III TO ADDRESS COLONIAL WRONGS

Today a joint statement was issued by representatives of First Nations, Indigenous peoples and advocacy groups from 12 Commonwealth countries calling on King Charles III to acknowledge the genocide and horrific impacts of colonisation on the indigenous people of Antigua and Barbuda, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

We’re calling for an apology from King Charles III and for a process of reparatory justice to commence with five specific requests.
